Ways to Ensure your Child Becomes a Successful Adult
There is always the concern parents have of raising good children. This goodness is meant for the present. Hardly do they think of what their present behavior means for their future lives. A good child now does not automatically mean a great adult in future. The better approach is not to think too much about the present, but to work on it to promote future behavior.
There is a disconnect when it comes to having good kids and them becoming great adults. You will know a good kid when you see one who is obedient, who does as they are told without question, who lets adults speak, and will not question authority in any way. These traits will not make such a great adult later. It is more important to aid them to learn how to think for themselves, to question what they are not comfortable with and not to follow people around blindly.
As kids grow into adults, you shall hear several parents complain how theirs have no ambition, no independence, and no urge to go out there and apply themselves. A closer inspection reveals that these were the kids who were always thought to be the best. They should not have expected any other outcome. They did not teach them any better.
It needs plenty of patience, energy and skill to raise them right. You will have to swallow your pride most of the time. You may have to allow them to question your authority in the decisions you make. You will have to learn to ask what their opinion is in certain subjects, so they can develop a perspective in life. You need to let them come up with solutions, so they learn to think for themselves. You need to also listen to them, especially where it is their welfare in question. If they present valid reasons and opinions, you should change your stance about the issue. When you show you were wrong, they will learn to do the same. You are not to think of it as allowing them to be disrespectful, ride or to do as they please. It is a question of balancing your approach and empowering the child through small steps. You remain the adult here. Your aim here is to teach them better traits.
Your opinion needs to have a rational explanation, and not a blanket command. You will discover more success in the process when you become the kind of person they will be proud to copy. Kids respond better to what you do than what you say.
